BATTERY QUICK JUMP SOLUTION

I have been looking around for a good way to build in a quick jump mechanism for my RV4.  You will see some fine examples of ingenuity on the RV-list.  The ones I like the best us a piper type receptacle for the application of jumper cables.  If you look at photo 1 you will see the cables and adapter that will be needed if you get a jump with just the piper adapter.  The next improvement to this system is the use of a generic adapter that will allow you to use any auto jumper cables.  You can purchase a jumper cable in a nice, small envelope type container that will be easy to carry, even in the limited space of an RV4.  You can even leave the cable out and borrow one from anyone on the flight-line.  The fuel truck will probably have one at any airport. The item I saw recently is available from various sources.  It is called the PLUG & JUMP.  It is seen alongside the Piper cables.

Jeff Sharman's RV4 is the subject of this column.  He has built-in a Piper receptacle into his interior.  The reason for the interior position is so he can control the placement of the jumpers himself, start the engine and have no one near the prop.  If you look at Figure 2 you will notice the Plug and Jump out of the Piper receptacle .  The legs are Jeff's.  Kind of skinny don't you think.

The Plug & Jump is seen in the Piper receptical and the jumper cables are attached in Figure 3.  I think this is a winner for the RV4 and probably has applications for other experimental aircraft. I have a Citabria that will be having one installed soon.  The Battery is way back, aft of the lugage area.  It will make an emergency jump a breeze.

I have talked with Jeff about the Plug & Jump availability and he happens to be the distributor for this unique adapter.  I think the price is  $68.00.  He said that anyone who mentions the RV-list or Matronics-lists would get a 10% discount.  He can be reached at jeff @jarlin.com.  You will find the Plug and Jump at the following website www.jarlin.com.  Tell him I sent you and he will tell you some stories about the use of composites that you haven't thought of.
