Mike Hedrick pulls alongside Duke Schoell with 500+ Young Eagles Flown.
wow!!!!!

Duke Schoell (second from right) with some of his "co-pilots".  Our other long in the tooth pilot Mike Hedrick came within one flight of reaching 500 Young Eagles flown.  Great going!

Mike Hedrick, a long time Young Eagles pilot and member of EAA1230 flew his 500th Young Eagle during a Young Eagles Fly-out A MacLellan Field in Sacramento.  Congratulations Mike, what a hero.

A NOTE FROM PRESIDENT MARSH

EAA 1230 Young Eagles Pilots and Tuskeegee/EAA Young Earles Ground Crew out for a celebration flight and lunch at Sac Exec.  Congratulations on a great day.

THANK YOU, EACH AND EVERY ONE, FOR MAKING OUR 1ST YOUNG EAGLES RALLY OF 2009 A SMASHING SUCCESS!

Although we have had a 3 month break, today’s Rally came off as though we had held one just last week.  Administration and registration was, as always, handled seamlessly by our colleagues from the Lee Archer, Jr. Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.  Tom B ucci and Mike Hedrick made early morning pre-rally sorties to evaluate the flying conditions and best route, with Tom taking on the job of briefing all of the pilots (and greeting the Young Eagles and parents).  Although Steve Romine usually oversees ramp marshalling, due to a schedule conflict he was unable to attend.  As a measure of Steve’s commitment, he provided a very worthy replacement (Rick-I-Forgot-His-Last-Name) a former Air Force crew chief to fill in for him.  Rick was smooooth!  Jean-Luc Duckworth, one of our Junior EAA Members, again brought one of his pc’s with flight simulators to give the Young Eagles a taste of flying while they waited for their flights, and (being one of Steve’s protégés) admirably assisted Rick on the ramp.

Several parents of students from the California Aerospace Academy joined us today.  We’ll be holding a special Young Eagles Rally just for them on 11 April 2009.  I learned of this academy through my dear friend Fran Kaiser whose son Jacob attends the Academy.  Fran brought Jaimie, Marnis and Ray (also parents of CAA students) to our Rally to observe and assist. They made themselves invaluable as escorts for the parents to-and-from the ramp.

Our Photo Mission also went well, mainly due to the efforts of Doug Porch and Renee Snow (usually one of our Y/E pilots, but grounded today by a dead battery).

We had a ‘Special Eagle’ today.  Duke Schoell told us at our meeting last week of a special man ( Troy ) who is an eight-year-old in a forty-year-old body, who used to fly with his (now) ‘Gone West’ father.  Though flying him did not fall under the sanctions of the Young Eagles Program, Duke asked if there were any volunteers to fly him.  I was very proud to see the number of our members who raised their hands, and it was John Cumins, accompanied by our past-president Woody Harris, who had the privilege of reuniting Troy with his joy of flying.  You wanna talk about a ‘Hug-Fest’?  Forget about it!

In all, we flew 50-some Young Eagles.  Mike Hedrick is one sortie away from making 500.  Our pilots were:

Dave Aronson
Tom Bucci
John Cumins
Mike Hedrick
Kimberly Nish
‘Duke’ Schoell

I am extremely proud to be a member of such a committed cadre as you.  Thank you all again.  See y’all at CAA/McClellan!

NEXT YOUNG EAGLES RALLYs,
NOVEMBER 21, 2009

ALL E.A.A. MEMBER PILOTS ARE REQUESTED TO CHECK-IN FOR PRE-FLIGHT BRIEFING

7:00AM FOR PILOT BRIEFING

8:00 am for Young Eagles

One of our 2006 Young Eagles. This young lady is actually flying the Balanca Citabria from the back seat!  A neat experience for both the "new pilot" and the old one up front. She was cool, calm and flew very well for her first time.  A future airline pilot maybe?

HARRISON FORD  NEW CHAIRMAN FOR YOUNG EAGLES

Harrison Ford, best known as a renowned actor in more than three dozen films but also an extremely active pilot and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), was introduced today as the new Chairman of the EAA Young Eagles Program, which has flown more than 1 million young people since 1992.

The EAA Chapter 1230 wants to promote, any way that is possible, safe and fun aviation.  Please come out to our activities and witness good old fun.  Your family is welcome too!.  The skies of America have always been a symbol of freedom.  Let's get out and use our freedom.  Plan to attend our next Young Eagles Fly-out.  Bring your kids, grandkids or neighborhood kids.  They will remember the day of flight forever.  KEEP AMERICA FLYING!!!!!

Young Eagles Flights

Our chapter members and friends have introduced over 2,500 youngsters to aviation by taking them on a first flight.  The E.A.A. member donates the aircraft and all related expenses so the flight is absolutely free.

We conduct a pre-flight, aviation information session to help educate the young people about the actual theory and science of flight. Fun as well as the importance of safety is always covered.  We really enjoy this activity! If you would like more information then leave your e-mail.

A group of young aviators take off with their E.A.A. pilot David Aronson.

E.A.A. Education and project assistance
Members of E.A.A. are included in the chapters educational programs and the use of the Technical Advisor.  If you have an experimental project and would like to get in touch with a technical advisor then the local E.A.A. Chapter 1230 is the place to be.  We plan to have  technique demonstrations in the near future. The membership is a wealth of knowledge and our chapter is a great way to organize that pool of resources.
