I am pleased to be here at the Nut Tree Airport.  I have received many warm greetings from many folks on and off the airfield starting before my arrival.  As with any new position there are many things to discover and this holds true for the Nut Tree Airport as well.  I look forward to making what I hope will be a positive contribution to the Airport and to serving the airport community.

Please stop by the airport office to say hello or drop me a line anytime at 707-469-4600.

INTERVIEW WITH DAVE DALY
AIRPORT MANAGER -SOLANO COUNTY NUT TREE AIRPORT
By David Aronson, 6/24/2011

Dave Daly comes to Nut Tree with a six year stint as manager of Lincoln Regional Airport in Placer County.  Prior to that he served as manager of the Yolo County Airport from 2000 to 2005.. He has served as principal planner for Yolo County and as a senior planner for the city of Merced.  He has two children and a wife in Sacramento and yes, he is a current private pilot.

Where are you from and were were you raised?

"I was born in the Bay Area and was raised in the Santa Clara area until 14 when we moved to Santa Rosa.  That is where I went to High School. My family was in the Meat business, raising, packing, and later into retail with a butcher shop and Deli."

When did you get the "flying" bug?

"I always liked airplanes and earned my license when I was 16.  I received my flight training at Santa Rosa Airport.  I am current in single engine land and fly out of the Davis University airport.  I like to fly their 172 and  have an hour or so in a 140 tail wheel aircraft."

What do you like about airport management?

I really enjoy the variety of things to do and accomplish and the people.  From land use and environmental concerns to hard capital projects to land leases and hangar construction.  Many different items, it's like a small city, with challenges in a variety ways.  The people are fun to work with and I enjoy that alot."

What do you not like about your new job?

"Nothing so far...I do wish that the  Nut Tree access had been preserved and the airport had more control of that property.  Something that may not be over."

What plans do you have to bolster County and City Communication and cooperation?

"I plan on continuing to meet people, meet regularly, communicate regularly and to build relationships and see where that leads."

How about plans to bolster relationships and communication with airport users?

"The same techniques, to meet with pilots, talk and listen to people.  I am here to learn."

What are you priorities during the first 6 months?

"Getting up to speed on obstruction removal, master plan progress, Runway markings and funding for airport projects, just to name a few."

How do you plan to keep track of user sentiment?

"I plan to be involved with groups and activities, to keep an open door policy.  I am not too busy yet and do not need to shut the door to catch-up, not yet.  I hope to be able to have people come up and talk."

How much of a Bureaucrat are you as policy enforcement goes?

"Policy exists for a reason, there is a role for rules and regulations. They can be burdensome at times and it is a balancing act to promote a flourishing environment for the airport and at the same time interpret and enforce rules.  The regulations on an airport should help support that flourishing environment not create a burden for the users."

What are your thoughts about future hangars, private and county owned?

I am not sure of the demand yet, our hangar list is not long. I do know that both private and county owned hangars can be difficult to finance and would not be of great profit to the county in the short-term.  Hangars provide excellent long-term returns.  I do not know at this time if there is a demand.  I do support private hangar development if adequate long-term land leases can be established and the county can realize an adequate return.

END OF INTERVIEW

As Mr. Daly has only been on the job for 6 days, many of the questions will be better answered after a few weeks.  Look back here for a continuation of the interview.
